Participate in HCUCC Day of Prayer and Public Witness
The HCUCC Justice and Witness Missional Team calls on churches and members to participate in a Day of Prayer and Public Witness on Tuesday, December 10, 2024 (which is also Human Rights Day).
Message from the Justice and Witness Missional Team:
Aloha kākou,
The war in Palestine and Lebanon continues to rage, with more than 45,000 people killed in Israel, Gaza, and Lebanon. The vast majority of those who have died were Palestinian women and children. Both the International Court of Justice and the UN Special Committee found that the nation of Israel’s actions rise to the level of genocide – and this genocide is being partially funded by the United States government. Now is the time for us – as U.S. citizens, and more importantly, as Christians who know that Christ calls us to be peacemakers – to speak out (Matthew 5:9). Now is the time for us to urgently and publicly call for a permanent ceasefire in Gaza, Israel, and Lebanon. This call was affirmed by the 202nd ‘Aha Pae‘āina of the Hawai‘i Conference of the United Church of Christ, which passed the Resolution of Witness: A Call to Education and Action Regarding the Crisis in Gaza.
Tuesday, December 10, 2024 will be our Conference-wide Day of Prayer and Public Witness. This is a time for our churches and members to raise our voices together and call for a ceasefire. There will be no one vigil or event organized by the Conference that churches can attend – and this is by design. Instead, we want our churches to fully take ownership and engage in this critical work, fully living into the call of the ‘Aha Pae‘āina. We hope that this will broaden our impact and make our work more visible to the public. Every church is strongly encouraged to participate in some way and of course, churches are welcome to partner together. If you are interested in partnering with another church on your island, we can help you make connections – just email us.
We've prepared a variety of resources that are available to churches and individuals to participate in the Day of Prayer and Public Witness. A lot of prayer has gone into the compilation of these resources, and we hope that they will be useful to you and your congregation.
To help with publicity and encouragement, please click here (or view the message board below) to share how your church will participate, or email us at mary-herbig@centralunionchurch.org. Let us prophetically raise our voices and call for a permanent ceasefire!
In Christ,
Justice and Witness Missional Team
