Anastasia Arao-Tagayuna, Moderator of Waiola Church in Lahaina, Maui, provided the following update on Waiola Church whose buildings were destroyed in the August 2023 fires:
“A few weeks ago, I had the opportunity to participate in a comprehensive 360-degree walkthrough with several key entities involved in the demolition and debris removal process. This included representatives from the United States Army Corps of Engineers, Aina Archaeologists, Goodfellow Brothers, Na Aikane cultural advisors, HiEMA, and others. The walkthrough allowed us to discuss the project’s approach and ensured that all parties were aligned in their efforts to proceed with care and respect for our sacred grounds. They were meticulous in avoiding certain areas, and we were mindful of adhering to our cultural protocols.”
Let us continue to hold the church, its members, and friends in prayer as they move through the long and arduous yet hope-filled process of rebuilding.

It’s really reassuring to hear that so many different groups are coming together with such care and respect for the land and cultural significance of the area. I can only imagine how complex and emotional this process must be, but it’s encouraging to know that these efforts are being made thoughtfully and collaboratively. Mahalo for your role in protecting and honoring these sacred grounds. sprunki phase 5
