The four Open & Affirming Congregations of the Kaua‘i Association participated in the Kaua‘i Pride Parade on Saturday, June 6.

Hanapēpē UCC, Kapa‘a UCC, Līhu‘e Christian Church, and Kōloa Union Church demonstrated their witness of welcome and inclusion with a large banner with the words "United Church of Christ Open & Affirming Congregations Welcome Everyone!", followed by decorated vehicles and walkers from all four congregations, and other congregations as well!

Kapa‘a UCC and Kōloa Union Church also had tables at the festival following the parade where they talked with hundreds of people about their churches' commitment to welcoming people of all identities, sexual orientations, and genders.

Kahu Alan Akana from Kōloa Union Church coordinated the event with lots of help from pastors and lay leaders from the participating churches. Akana said, "The participation of the four congregations was a great opportunity for us to be a witness to the many people who have been hurt by judgment, condemnation, and being ostracized from churches where they have attended in the past. It is important to let them know that God loves all people, regardless of sexual orientation or gender identity and expression, and that there are communities of faith where they are welcome to be in fellowship, grow in faith, and show compassion to others. It was also a fun day for everyone involved to celebrate who we are as individuals, relationships, families, and communities."

Akana points out that participation in the parade and festival brings people to church: "Every year after Pride, people whom we meet show up at church. Some return. Some even join our church!"
