Join Hawai‘i PAAM for a Celebration of Song and Dance at the ‘Aha Mele Festival

Honolulu, HI — Kawaiaha‘o Church and Hawai‘i PAAM are hosting an upcoming ‘Aha Mele on Friday, June 21st, 2024, at 6:30 PM. This vibrant gathering, sponsored by Hawai‘i PAAM (Pacific Islander and Asian American Ministries), will feature choral and dance ministries from various churches as part of the 50th anniversary celebration of the national PAAM, during their bi-annual conference from June 18-22.

The ‘Aha Mele is dedicated to honoring the cherished legacy of Juliette Galuteria, a beloved MC of previous events. This year’s festival is not a competition but a "hō‘ike," an opportunity for uplifting and sharing among participants. Sacred dance ministries and individuals are encouraged to join in the joyous occasion.

In light of the challenges posed by the COVID pandemic and the subsequent hiatus of many church choirs, PAAM is extending a special invitation to all church choirs and individuals to form a “joint choir.” This choir will perform two songs together, with rehearsals scheduled for June 10th and June 17th from 6:30-7:30 PM at Moanalua Community Church.

Additionally, is having a “joint hula” dance featuring the PAAM theme song “Ola I Ka Wai.” All participants are welcome to learn this simple hula during rehearsals on Sundays May 5th and May 19th from 3:00-4:30 PM at Ewa Community Church. This initiative invites dancers of all ages and skills to partake in a shared cultural experience.

We warmly invite choral and dance ministries, as well as individual enthusiasts, to join us in this festive celebration. For more details, or to participate in the choral or dance activities, please refer to the contacts provided below. To participate, please download, complete, and submit this application form.

Come, bring your voices and dancing spirits, and let’s celebrate together in unity and joy!
