Running from Empty

Devotional by the Stillspeaking Writers' Group

"Enter Lent, which is all about surrender, emptying, and letting go of everything that leads away from the cross. Running from Empty is a daily invitation to embrace the empty places we might prefer to avoid; to breathe deeply, love fully, act justly; and to find Jesus in the stillness and the storm."

Lenten study from UCC's Join the Movement

Throughout the testimony of the gospel narratives, we encounter a Jesus who leans into difficult conversations.  In fact, the inspiration for the season of Lent – Jesus’ journey in the wilderness – is a series of courageous conversations.  As followers of Jesus, we, too, are called to speak truth and listen with love so that we might build our capacities for creating and sustaining liberative communities.  This Lent, partner with Join the Movement toward Racial Justice and commit to engaging in courageous conversations with yourself, with a few dear ones, or with your community.  On each of the 40 days of Lent, we will offer a conversation/journaling prompt to help you explore more fully your connection to racial justice and practices of antiracism, along with a breath prayer and scripture reading. You can also access these prompts on InstagramFacebookTwitter.

From UCC's Join the Movement

During Holy Week, we mark moments in the life of Jesus and the disciples that catalyzed a movement rooted in the transformative power of radical love.  How might these sacred days be inviting us to Join the Movement?

(2021) Christ Have Mercy A Lenten liturgy of confession and repentance from the ways we embody White Supremacy Culture. Created by Disrupt Worship Project which creates "liturgy, litanies and commentaries that lift up new voices and push towards justice."

(2020) Keeping a Green Lent, a prayer litany for each week in Lent, is shared by Roxanne WhiteLight and Ruth Langstraat.

(2020) Former Hawaii Conference Associate Conference Minister Donald Schmidt has recently published two Bible studies with Wood Lake Publishing that are appropriate for this season: Death of Jesus for Progressive Christians and Easter for Progressive Christians. Each 5-week study invites you to dig into your faith as you explore the scriptures for these seasons, and let the Bible really speak to you.

(2020) Observe Lent with Kamehameha Schools Devotionals
Kamehameha Schools has created a series of Hawaiian-focused devotionals for Lent, to honor the deep Christian faith of founder Princess Pauahi. The devotionals were designed to be used by staffers, students, and others to celebrate the coming of Easter. Subscribe to receive the latest weekly devotionals by email.

(2020) To accompany the Ash Wednesday release of the United Church of Christ's report entitled "Breath to the People: Sacred Air and Toxic Pollution," six environmental justice leaders in the UCC have authored reflections to help preachers connect the contents of the report to each Sunday in Lent. The overarching theme for these reflections is "Journey Toward Hope."

(2019) Young Voices: Stepping Out of the Wilderness is a 47 day devotion to walk you through Lent and concludes with the good news of Easter Sunday. All entries were written by UCC youth and young adults between the ages of 12 and 35 who span the spectrum of gender identity, sexuality, racial, and ethnic diversity. This lenten study is available for download for $5. Proceeds will be used for additional programs and outreach for youth and young adults in the United Church of Christ.
