In Memory: Evyn Adams
Evyn Adams, missionary, college professor, and minister, died March 5 at Franciscan Hospice House in Tacoma, Washington, at the age of 95. Evyn taught religion for 22 years at the University of Hawai`i in Hilo and was also Pastor of Puula UCC and Lanakila Congregational Church before he retired in 1993.
His grandson, Joshua Andrews, writes this about Evyn’s life and ministry:
“Evyn was a missionary for 15 years in Japan, a pastor with the United Methodist Church and then the United Church of Christ for 30 years, a professor of philosophy and religious studies for more than 25 years, and a beloved husband, father, grandfather, and friend of many. Evyn
was married to Joy Young
of Charleston, West Virginia, for 50 years until she passed away. He was then later married to Neva Simms of Belleville, Illinois, for 15 years.”
Evyn’s wish was that any memorial gifts be given to the One Mission Society (Box A, Greenwood, IN 46142; http://www.onemissionsociety.org) for the education of future missionaries.
A memorial service will be held at Lanakila Congregational Church in Kainaliu, Hawai`i Island, on November 27, 2015. Those who would like to attend are asked to respond to Evyn’s daughter, Betty Andrews, at 253-324-0020 by August 31, 2015.
