2021 Pastoral Leaders Retreat
“Remember the Sabbath day by keeping it holy” –Exodus 20:8
September 15-16, 2021
Wednesday: 8:40 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. via Zoom
Thursday: 9:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. in-person by islands
Can we hear the commandment to keep the Sabbath holy as an invitation to cease activity, to trust God completely and to receive life in the Spirit? The Hawai‘i Conference Formation Missional Team invites you to observe Sabbath in the company of your colleagues.
Our speaker will be the Rev. Dr. Carrie Doehring, Professor of Pastoral Care and Counseling at Iliff School of Theology. She will encourage us to keep Sabbath and will introduce a breathing exercise as a complement to our spiritual practices. She will also invite us to pay attention to our spiritual and moral struggles, which have been heightened by the coronavirus pandemic. She will join us on Wednesday from Denver via Zoom.
On Thursday, we will gather with our colleagues on our respective islands (public health guidelines permitting) to practice what we have learned from Dr. Doehring and to observe Sabbath together. We will gather on Kauai at Waineke; O‘ahu at St. Anthony Retreat Center; Maui at Keawala‘i Church; and Hawai‘i at KMC – Volcano*.
The retreat will also feature worship, a message by our Conference Minister, the Rev. Dr. David Popham, prayer, small group sharing and discussion, gathering in a beautiful outdoor space, and a chance to be apart for a time.
The planning team would like for all pastoral leaders to experience Sabbath. Please plan to take the two days of the retreat off to give your full attention to what God will be saying to you.
Please register by Friday, August 27. Details on the island gatherings will be sent to you after you register. Late registrations will not be accepted. For questions and scholarship information, please contact Janice Ogoshi at email@example.com or 808-553-3823. This event is made possible by your gifts to Our Church’s Wider Mission.
*Please note: The Hawai‘i island gathering will offer an optional overnight stay at an additional cost. Please contact Melveen Kaupiko for more information.
